Buildings and grounds collection, 1820-[ongoing].

Information on Amherst College's buildings and grounds and their uses. The materials include Amherst College financial documents (fund raising, gifts), architects' drawings, accounts of dedications, ground breaking, construction, and remodeling. For many of the buildings, blue prints, drawings, and both exterior and interior photographs dating from the 1860s provide a remarkably complete account. Also in the collection are deeds of land; surveys; information about off-campus holdings and properties; campus views, including drawings and photographs; documentation of the 1938 hurricane and its effects; records of memorials and sculptures located on the campus; information regarding the athletic grounds and playing fields; the Wildlife Sanctuary; and other information about functions such as campus utilities. Of special interest are various schemes for developing the College Campus by Frederick Law Olmsted for the late 1890s and early 1900s and Arthur A. Shurcliff, in the 1920s.
